I missed this one when it came out a few months ago but it shows how the fashion industry is paying closer attention to training in a performance based manner. VMan chooses the guy from the Calvin Klein commercial (aka Matthew Terry) to demonstrate the clean & jerk for an editorial. I'm assuming that the title is more of a reference to the exercise being the choice if you could only do one while deserted on an island than the best exercise to do on said island, but either way its an odd choice of a name.
Two or three years ago, finding anyone doing any sort of clean outside of an olympic weightlifting facility or a college training room would have been next to impossible. But today, thanks largely to the popularity of CrossFit, it's not only common but apparently the cool thing to do.
The short editorial is right though. You want bang for your buck? A clean and jerk is going to target a ton of muscles, increase neuromuscular activity and get your heart rate up in a hurry. It's essentially a deadlift, clean, front squat and jerk press all wrapped into one well-coordinated package.
Just please, get someone to teach you how to do it before trying it. And make sure that person knows how to do it themselves. Seminars and books don't do this one justice...
